Many of these foods are fruits and vegetables that contain certain types of sugars, carbohydrates, and other compounds that many people find difficult to digest. They are usually fine in moderation, but if you are sensitive to them or eat too much they can cause gas, bloating, and indigestion.


While the foods on list list tend to be problematic for some people, others are able to eat them without any problems at all. While you should pay special attention to these foods to see how they affect you, there's no need to cut them out of your diet unless you suffer ill effects.


If you experience uncomfortable gas, bloating, or other symptoms on a regular basis, you should try to find the culprit. You can start by reducing or eliminating some of the foods on this list from your diet to see if you feel better and your COPD symptoms improve.

This can be very uncomfortable and worsen symptoms for people with COPD, because excess mucus can clog your airways and make it even more difficult to breathe.


However, some people are more sensitive to this effect than others. If you notice that dairy products make you more phlegmy and make your symptoms worse, try to avoid it and replace it with other sources of calcium and healthy fats. If you know that dairy doesn't affect your breathing or cause any other symptoms, then there's no need to worry.

Raffinose is an indigestible sugar that can cause gas and bloating.


Cruciferous veggies like broccoli and cabbage are very nutritious, high in fiber, and can be a healthy part of a COPD diet. However, they are also known to cause gas and bloating, which can make COPD symptoms worse.


This happens in part because cruciferous veggies contain a type of indigestible sugar called raffinose. Because our bodies don't produce the right kind of enzyme to break raffinose down, it gets fermented by bacteria in the small intestine which results in excess gas.


Like dairy, cruciferous veggies are only a problem for some people some of the time. It is a good idea to limit your intake of cruciferous veggies if you notice extra gas or discomfort, but there's no need to avoid them if you don't experience any problems.
